I’m riding from Perth to Sydney in search of a good adventure. I’ll be starting on the 2nd of August. You can follow along my adventure thanks to the support of MAAP, Specialized Australia, Knog and Skratch Labs Australia and keep up to date with my trip progress here.
The older I get, the more I feel life's cascading rises and falls: the richness, sadness, joy, losses, and the fire of purpose. For me, the last few years have been particularly defining as I’ve grown, explored, and chased opportunities that I feel excited and passionate about.
I found 2023 to be a really challenging year, despite it simultaneously being one I think I’ll look back on and cherish the most. During last year's turbulence, I often thought about a dear friend, Maddy. Maddy sadly lost her battle with leukemia in 2022. She was only 26.
In an attempt to find my spark again, I became obsessed with spontaneity and the satisfaction I’d feel from planning and executing an adventure, no matter how big, small or random it may have been! On a solo ride from Canberra to Albury, I crossed the border into Victoria and felt this unfathomable thrill that I had just ridden into a state I had only ever driven to. That night, as the stars began to take over the sky and I rolled into Albury some 350 km later, I felt this fuelling desire that I wanted to do more, and I resolved that I would ride across the country I call my own in 2024.
With the seed for this adventure planted, I continued to work hard on my mental health, and work towards this idea of crossing this huge and beautiful place. So, this August, I will be riding my bike from Perth to Sydney in the fastest possible time I can. This ride is about doing something that challenges, excites, scares, and inspires me.
My target for the ride is 10-14 days, and while I already feel a deep satisfaction in the planning, dreaming and logistics it’s taken me even to book a one-way plane trip to the other side of Australia, I’m excited for what lies ahead.
It’s not a race; there are no rules. It’ll just be me, my bike and whoever I meet down the road…
I moved to Canberra from Sydney at the end of 2017 and slowly became friends with this incredible group of women. These women are inspiring… Doctors, Olympians, World and National Champions, Mt Everest summiteers, and business owners, to name some of their accolades outside of being great people. Maddy was part of the heart of this group, and as we’ve aged, had children, moved away or moved on, there is something about this group that will always feel special to me.
